Luggin' the Motor

RE: Luggin' the Motor
Thanks for the comments.
Again, I think it was a tank of bad gasoline since everythingis running fine on my current tank. I started the post because my scootrecently made abnormalnoises andit occurred at an appropriate speed range forthe gear I was in and at a speed/gear combowhere I haven't had any noises before.
With reference to reading the manual and what gear is appropriate for which speed, HD says the following. On page 164 of the 2006 Touring Models Owner's Manual, Table 36...HD recommends shiftingfrom 4th to 5th at 45 MPH during acceleration. It may be too slow for some, butHD apparently thinks it is the correct speed for my motor and trans...

RE: Luggin' the Motor
Some of you guys have racing cams- that's why your engines "lug" at 2000 rpm in 5th. A stock bike will easily cruise at a steady speed in 5th at 2000 rpm or even a little lower. And I've got 125,000 miles on mine to prove it- although I have an EV13 cam now. And my Low Rider has a tach.
But I agree; if you're nailing it at low rpm in 5th, you're going to do something nasty to your engine quick.

RE: Luggin' the Motor
On looking at some Twin Cam cam specs for the 96" engine, it appears that the intake valve closes at 40 degrees! That is a late closing cam and will definitely reduce your low end power. Very odd choice for a stock cam. The carbureted 88TC's also had a late closing cam at 38 degrees. The injected 88's stock cam closed the intake at 34 degrees. My original Evo cam closed the intake at 30; my EV13 at 31, albeit with a much earlier opening number.
What I'm trying to say is that ALL Twin Cams except the 88 injected ones have what amounts to an oddball EPA racing cam; so, yeah, you're lugging it at a much higher rpm than it would take to lug my Evo. Why would they do that?
I stand corrected.

RE: Luggin' the Motor
So does HD have that many different variations in cams in their motors?
Mine is an '06 88A injected 5 speed and it will run all day long at 45 MPH in 5th without the slightest ping.Like I stated above,45 MPH iswhen my manual says to shift to 5th during acceleration. Hell,it will not ping at 40 MPH in 5th! That is until I got a bad tank of gas...
Oh great, here comes the "ride it like you stole it" & "read your manual"comments again...
