RE: changing primary oil
make sure oil is hot. Gets out all the dirt. Have bike on motorcycle jack. Fill through derby cover and you won't need a new gasket. Oil should just touch bottom of clutch plates. Make sure you put teflon tape on drain plug and don't overtighten. Using flashlight makes checking oil level easier.

RE: changing primary oil
I have a dyna plus the service manual for it - the manual specifies replacing the o-ring on the drain plug. I would assume road kings have this too - FYI for what it's worth.
The manual also says to re-tighten the torx screws on the clutch cover using a specific sequence. My dad actually taught me to do this type of sequence when I was a kid, but if you have never seen it, I'll try to describe it:
If you start numbering the bolts of the derby cover with the top bolt being #1 and go clockwise around the cover, #2, #3, #4, #5 you would have to tighten in this sequence:
#1, #4, #2, #5, #3 - or as my dad used to say, "tighten across going in a clockwise direction" (which, being a picture person myself, never really helps me that much personally).
Finally, here's a link to an older posting that has some RK specific info in it. I hope this helps: https://www.hdforums.com/m_73062/printable.htm Scroll down to the answer from ClassicRider2002, dated (7/10/2005 1:30:42 AM).
Good luck!
