Default gloss black exhaust

I have a chrome bub 7 2 to 1 on my dyna and i would like to make it gloss black. I am looking for suggestions. This is for heat shields and muffler. I am good with a spray can, so that is an option, but mostly i just want it to look really good and hold up well. I can take it to someone local (austin) if i am going to get much better results. I don't really want to ship it some where because of the time and added expense.

i am looking to do the shields and the muffler, the muffler gets pretty hot ( much hotter than shields). Most of the black pipes i see are flat and i just thought it would look bad *** gloss.

What would be the best can/cans to use if it was satin.
and what would be the best prep.

ps jrk I followed your writ up about appliance epoxy on front forks and they turned out really good and it was maybe 1 1/2 years ago

I looked for a gloss black spray for mufflers recently. The paint I found in gloss that was the highest temp rating was VHT Brake Caliper paint that is rated to 900 degrees. Most engine enamels are 500.

Bug Bomb wont hold up for one days ride, save that crap for painting your Barbeque

Best Budget Method
You can get a gloss high temp exhaust paint from POR 15 that is a Gloss Black... That stuff is as tough as powder and if sprayed it looks the just as good... I did my Land Rover Defender 90 a few years ago. Oh don't get it on your skin, trust me on that... Also the surface needs to be rough so hit it with 200 grit or bead blast it, if its smooth the POR will peal like a latex glove when dried... I used allot of POR products on my truck, to lazy to do that on my Bike...

If money is no object go Black Chrome is the best for show look, but will rust out if bike is ridden regular

My favorite is Black Ceramic its a bit flat but will outlast everything else, just had my Rush pipes redone in black ceramic... I wanted flat look and was too lazy to POR, they came out awesome...

I'm not really sold on using powder on heat shields... I was always advised against it by every reputable powder-coater I've used or asked...

By the looks of your guys it seems to work so who knows.......

Good Luck

I'm runnin powder coated heat shields on my current bike and have run them on several other bikes with no issues at all. They don't see the heat the muffler does particularly at the point where the head pipe meets the baffle. I'm told there are high temp powders out there but my coater says they aren't what they should be.

Your bike, but I wouldn't rattle-can anything on mine...especially if you want it to last/look good. Yes tons of rider/owners are good w/cans...just not my choice on $20K ride. If you want it done the way specified (look really good & hold up well) then find a local coater in your area & work a proce/schedule. You'll be suprised at how economical coating is & it'll last for life of your bike.

as long as your bike is properly tuned the powder (not high temp powder) on the shields is 100% ok... we have literally coated hundreds of shields and only had 2 issues... 1 was due to a contaminate in the metal on a shield, the other was a bike that was running way lean... but that is all
