Painting old chrome exhaust.....
Having recently purchased a 2003 Fat Boy used, the previous owner wasn't very meticulous with the chrome on the exhaust...(besides fitting Cycle Shack slip-on mufflers without the original heat shields)....he allowed the chrome to rust on the back & bottom of the mufflers, and also on the insides of the stock heat shields....
I spent my wad on the bike, and won't be able to afford a new exhaust until maybe next Christmas, in the mean time I was thinking about painting the exhaust with Plastikote Hi-Temp flat black. Both sides of the heat shields and the mufflers.
Again I'd be painting over chrome, I'm no stranger to painting, but I've never painted chrome before, and was wondering if there is anything special I'd have to do for this to work. The paint I have in mind is rated for temps up to 1300° and is made for header pipes and manifolds, the can has no information concerning application over chrome......
I know that surface preparation is everything, just not sure what special needs apply to chrome, or if it's even possible.......????
