rattle can wrinkle paint, what say you?
I just got a 98 fatboy that has been highly modded but not taken care of which sux *****. how can anyone just let their very expensive chrome parts go all to hell. I have lots of "machine performance" parts with chrome peeling off. thinking about going with black wrinkle on them. whats the best I can get?

I painted the foot peg brackets that were chrome with VHT wrinkle plus. They turned out great and have held up perfectly. I cleaned the parts with dish soap. scuffed them up well with 100-120 grit sandpaper to prep them. Just follow the directions on the can. Very important to wait the 5 minutes between coats and vary your spray angle (explains it on can). here is what i used and the results. It dries a little less shiny in the end, but you get the idea. I did not use any primer but I did spray a couple fog coats first.

I purchased a used oven off of CL for 70 bucks and did my own using VHT wrinkle black. Blasted the primary and painted and baked.
This is the orig derby cover sitting on the primary that I painted. Looks the same to me. I just don't know about the durability over powder. I also did my rocker box covers, air cleaner, mid controls.

First blast and clean the crap out of the part to be painted. I put it in the oven @ 300 *f for 15 min after I cleaned it to off gas anything on the part.
I let the part cool to 95* f and put down a tack coat. Wait 5 min and put down three more thicker coats in different directions. I turn the oven up to 325 and place the part in the oven for about 5-10 min. I watch the part and as soon as the part has wrinkled I turn the temp down to 225 for 30 min. That's it let it cool.
I have learned that you cannot touch up any spots so you need to get it right the first time. If there are some spots that don't look right after the first bake you can let it cool and add more paint and bake again but I found it to build up too much in spots.
So in conclusion Clean, off gas bake, three coats, bake at 325 until wrinkle, turn down to 225 for 30 min and its done.

About 18 years ago I used VHT wrinkle paint on my EVO Sportster's rocker boxes, primary and cam cover and pushrod tubes and lifter blocks. I still have the bike and the paint is holding up extremely well. The only bad spots are where I've chipped it with tools during repairs or maintenance. Its all in the prep. I scuffed everything with Scotchbrite, washed with hot soapy water and wiped down everything with degreaser and followed the directions on the can carefully. I used a heat gun to dring out the wrinkle and it still looks great today.
