can anyone confirm that the early model shovel heads are the ones I need?

I think I'd just get another set of heads. shovel's are everywhere

66-79 used the older style intake manifold set up; 80-84 used the rubberband type. Rocker covers are the same 66-84

Hey panz. forgive my ignorance but why not heli-coil. I'm no old HD wrench but done a bunch of heli-coils in aluminum heads and tons other applications (all non bike stuff) and never had an issue. Just trying to learn sumtin so I dont pass on bad advice.

Default HD shovelheads

The early shovels have the shorter sparkplugs I run a set of 1974 shovels on my 52 pan bottom

Take a look at the second pic he posted in #7. Looks like the area around the threaded end is split from someone trying to crank on the nut or the threaded end too tightly.

I know what your saying but if it were filled in(TIG) wouldnt it be better to tap and insert a heli coil. Just thought a steel thread would be better than alum. Just askin. Being an air cooled motor do heli coils work themselves out?
