Wiring a 12 volt coil
Does it matter what side of the typical coil that you put the positive wire to and the other that goes to the dist.?

I don't think it matters cause they aren't labled "+ or -" but the hot wire usually goes on top.

A reversed polarity coil will still run the engine in most cases but it will not run properly.

If the coil is not marked + or - either connector will do Is it one of those round coils with both connectors on top ?

Right, in a car where they are maked, if you hook the points to the + side it causes the polarity to reverse in the secondary windings and the plugs fire backwards
