Default STROKE OR NOT TO STROKE

I have a 1956 panhead with extensive damage to flywheels. I am thinking about going with 80 inch flywheels.I am not sure what else I have to do to build this motor. What pistons etc. Any info would be appreciated.

I would go with 80 cu in Make sure you lengthen the rear cylinder scrapper plate 80 in wheels are smaller diameter than 74 wheels I would use forged pistons I did my knuckle like this lots of power Considering I had a 61 cu in bottom end with 74 cu in cylinders original I guess so

Not sure how to lengthen sccraper. can i run same cylinders? also I was reading ad at web site where they sell stroker flywheels and it said I need different pistons. Does that mean I need 80 pistons?

When you split your cases( or a good shop) You will see looking down at the right case with the orig flywheels in place (rear cyl area about 1 oclock ) a scrapper that should be .020 to .040 distance from the flywheel outer surface When the new 80 in wheels are installed this distance must be maintained (welding reguired) You can use your existing cylinders I think S&S offers a kit Wheels/rods all balanced plus pistons I would probably use LC pistons Size wise pending condition of your cylinders I probably wouldn't go more than .060 over size on the bore Good luck

biggest mistake i ever did was install the s&s sidewinder kit for my '58...84 c...nice setup but it turned my one kicker into a unpredictable nightmare at times.
i am planning on putting the old flywhells and pistons back in.
hope this helps...good luck

Longevity comes from a stock stroke....and the heavy flywheels(34lbs.) are great for torque in the lower RPM range. You can make a panhead run great with STD heads And an Andrews "B" Grind cam....I ran KB pistons in mine, decked the heads 35 thou. which brought the compression up to about 9.6-1.

If you'd like to know more about 'er...lemme know!![8D]

The 88" S&S kit is amazing for pans. I ran it for over 10 years and loved every minute of it. I too had a B grind andrews cam, and STD dual plug heads. It had velva-touch lifters (can't recall manufacturer) and it took all the pan valve train noise out completely. I ran an S&S super B, and it was a one kicker for all the time it ran after the carb was adjusted correctly. I put a close ratio 4 speed andrews gears in the tranny, and it ran better than any bike I have ever had.

Enjoy,
