Panhead gas tanks

Panhead gas tanks
I just bought a "custom" shovelhead on a rigid frame with panhead gas tanks, 3.75 gal I believe, has the pop-up stopper on the left side for reserve. So, what is the gas filling method for these, without getting gas overflow? This is my 7th bike, 2nd Harley, but I've never had split tanks before.

RE: Panhead gas tanks
Gas tanks should be 3.5 gallon (except for 65 which was 5 gal). I always fill the right side first and then the left. Seems to make sense cuz the bike leans to the left on the side stand and with theline under connecting the two sides gravity will push it to the lowest point first. Never had a problem w/ overflowing and been riding the same 65 since 1970.

RE: Panhead gas tanks
K...cant speak for all 65 pan owners butI can say thatI am riding the same 2nd owner65 pan since 1970. It has the 5 gal foot shift tanks and the two gas caps are stock and definitelyNOT interchangeable. The only things not stockare the paint and modern round tires. 65 was 1st year for 5 gal tanks. Wonder if that had something to do w/ it.
