I'd been working on some other bikes but got back to the panhead.

I made a cover for the primary and tranny bracket to remove the foot peg posts..

I made a pin socket for the crank nut.. It took a little fitting,, Their holes were off.. The friken nut was loose.

Made a puller for the clutch hub and later added the holes for the inner primary.. The center bolt is from a 50 year old snap on set.

Notice the bolt.. More on that later.. Also the wrong washers..

For some reason someone tried to cut off the filler neck.. Inside wasn't too bad. Maybe they couldn't get it in?

I kept finding stuff that was supposed to be tight that wasn't and small stuff that was torqued incredibly tight.. the primary had some rust, gaskets missing. I think they thought, if it leaked, tighten it some more..

With that stuff, I pulled the tranny..

Now you get to look inside the transmission.

Yep..

IMO it's not too bad.. Primary needs work.. The plan was to go replace all the seals / o rings..

The primary is the issue..

Previous owner had a busted stud and did a crappy drill job. I'm thinking to bore to some size then make a plug to seal up and cut new threads in the plug. Plug may be steel or 6061-t6

The case has a crack that will need to be welded and surfaces machined, both the starter and inner primary.

4th gear lacks a seal so oil can run out from between the main shaft and the splined gear itself. Andrews offers a machined gear with a lip seal as well as closer ratios if you ended up wanting to upgrade while its apart.

I looked at the main drive gear and it appears to have a seal.. Parts manual says it's a 12013 that was used in the 65 pan and early 66 shovel. Ref 61to 71 EG/SG manual.

This bring up another question. Tranny has a 22 tooth sprocket. How big can I go? I'm thinking 23 or 24.. 25 may be too big.. This bike has had the chain rub practically every possible surface on the inner primary and transmission. I assume it was to to poor maintenance. This bike might get used on a freeway tho I'll probably have to stay in the slow lane..

I wouldn’t want to go any bigger than 23. The problem is with the 24 is if the chain gets a little loose. It starts whack in the heck out of the inside of your primary case.

for non-hot rod, shovels and pans, I really like a 23 on the transmission and a 49 outback. It brings your rpm down a little bit in case you want to do some 55-60 mile an hour trips.
