I checked and the head sits flush on the gasket surface without the gasket so there is still clearance. The only other issue I need to check is how close the edge of the pistons comes to the head. The cases have about 0.005" removed from the top and with about 0.014" removed from the cylinders that knocks it down about 21 thou. I plan on using cometic high density fiber base gaskets and probably 0.040 MLS.. The cometic base is 0.030 thick. I suspect that the old paper ones are 0.020? The heads have been cut for cleanup so I don't know how much was removed there..

I installed the pistons / cylinders without rings and set the heads on without gaskets then rotated the motor. Nothing touched. When setting the ring gaps the second ring was within a thou of spec (0.014). The top rings were set the same so they had to be cut to 0.024" I suspect that these rings are the same as ones provided for the forged pistons which use the narrower top end ring gap..
Anyway, even after washing the cylinder with solvent and a rag, the MMO trick still showed some gray.. It took 4 passes of coating the cylinder with MMO and wiping with a white paper towel before the most of the gray was gone..

Got the heads back with new seats.. There are a few issues I'm not too happy about but I plan on using them.. One of them was that he resurfaced the heads without welding the fin on.. He did give me the fin off of a shovel.. I would have prefered he didn't surface the heads unless he put the fin on.
