Now for the PITA. I go to assemble the pump on the engine case and when I do the oil pump shaft binds up.. WTF? There were 2 marks where the previous guy that worked on it had used a long key on the feed gears and dinged the pump hole.. I cleaned it up and it still binds. AFAICT, the hole is off in the pump. The pump body actually looks new except for the check ball seat was pretty bad. I suspect that this pump body is some aftermarket one.. I think that something got caught in the previous pump and damaged it.. Some parts do have some miles on them tho. I checked the shaft and it's within 5 tenths.
When I pulled the motor apart, the pump housing came off stiff. I assumed it was the pump studs were bent, some were.. They also had 1/4-20 nuts on the 1/4-24 stud. I bought a new stud kit from Colony.
Right no the plan is to dykem the hole in the pump, then use a scraper to open up the hole until it shaft spins freely..
@panz4ever wanted to buy this pump body.. Good thing I didn't sell it to him. He would have been pissed..

Cheat for that inner cone bearing, heat that puppy up a bit and 95% of the time it'll just slip on. Old flea market hotplate works real well for that. And yeah depending on the fingers that day those snap rings on the oil pump shaft can be fun. I do the inside the case first then block it a bit so the shaft won't push back in when installing the pump body & gears.

Yeah, heat would have worked. For the outer cones, I did the heating when baking the Glyptal, then pressed the outer cones in.. I had the jims tool for the inners, so it wasn't too hard to get them on..
I spent some time dicken around with the pump shaft. It's kind or wierd. It slips in fine about 1/2 way with the current shaft but gets snug.. The shaft fits fine in the case and fine in the pump but when I put the pump on the engine case it don't fit. I check the pump shaft again and it has some weird bends but still less then about 0.0008". I think I need shorter Vs. Looking to get new shaft and recheck.. The shaft appears to be 27/64"

Yeah, I tried tapping, also reamed the dowel pin holes 3/16+0.001 so that the pump housing slides into place.. Helped a little bit shaft still bound up pretty solid.. Had to use a screw driver to turn the drive gear in the cam case..
I pretty sure this motor blew up at one time and something went through the pump. The pump body looks new except for the exterior rust and rust on the check valve seat. The pump shaft has some nicks around the keyways.. It's probably how the last owner got it. It was supposed to be a not running police bike bought at an auction near Oakland, Ca.. I suspect that is way it was registered in Montana as a 1973. It probably had a 73 salvage title in CA.
