Thanks for the photos. Front cylinder was cast Feb 17, 1950. Hadn’t seen one from that day before so I can add it to my collection. On Pan front cylinders the earliest I’ve seen thus far is Feb 16 (1950). Notice B and the DC plate are up the right way. Also notice the plate is large as opposed to small. All as I’d expect at that stage.

First starter cover below has indented casting number 33-352 which never had a plate over it. In 1938 aluminium DCs the letter I wasn’t skipped and there’s no sign yet of the letter M so on this cover J and 8 indicate Oct 38.

Next cover also has casting number 33-352 but now it’s raised and on a plate. The plate seems to have been introduced in Oct 47 and under it may be the same casting number indented. This cover was cast in 1948 but what month J indicates is unclear and research is ongoing, as it is for 1948 BT trans lid DCs and 1948–49 BT trans case DCs.

Next is your cover. Did something happen on the side? Maybe a plate was removed?

If a plate was removed then the date code may indicate 1948. Also your vent boss is unmachined which could be another indication the cover was cast in 48 as opposed to 38. And notice your DC characters are unspaced which is what I’d usually expect for later-48. In early aluminium DCs the characters are normally spaced as per the Oct 38 cover I posted above. But in August 48 there seems to have been a change to unspaced characters and that practice continued for the rest of 48 and into Jan 49 although I’ve seen a few exceptions.

I’ve seen several trans cases relieved at top front but they weren’t cast that way. I even did it to my own 10 60 case, and my handshift lid, when I transferred everything into a rigid frame for a short while in the early-80s.

According to Palmer, 55-earlier cases were originally machined for reverse gear but it only happened with 56-later cases when required so your case could fall into either category as far as that is concerned. However, I still think your case may be 56-later because even though it has a vent nipple the boss doesn’t look recessed but instead appears flat as I mentioned above.

Given your SN I imagine you’d be looking for a trans case with DC from about mid/later-47?

Link below is to my thread on H-G for more trans case ID.

I took some pics of it outside and its clearly had the number removed but no repairs inside, there goes my AMCA hopes!

Great info Eric, a big thanks as always.

On the subject of AMCA and deductions, the guy that sold me the bike has had bikes judged throughout the US and had very high scoring bikes. He mentioned the headlight ring for the 48 being one he was deducted on at a show because when they chromed it the rivets that hold the screw brackets on the ring should have been cad not chromed along with the ring. They sound fussy!

Im curious how much of a deduction something like my kicker cover lacking the casting number would be worth? Or those chrome rivets in the ring? Or do they combine a few infractions and assign one point for a few small errors? No plans for that kind of build at this point, just want to know.

i've never done it with motorcycles , but with many hobbies , or other passions , if you see something for sale you buy it . you might not need it now , but when you do need it you might not be able to find it . better to have too much than to not have something you really need .

Getting the frame ready for a repaint, filling in little scars and dings here and there. I debated erasing the "off road" history on the underside of lower rails but it shows its not a new Paughco frame and some patina is okay.
