With the 84 sold and the 96 to be gone by the end of next week, I'm am finally getting space to finish up the 65 and getting around to the needs of my niece's Chopped 50. Just can't (won't) put the bikes out in the rain.
I went with a J cam like the 62 with the thought that the later intake closing will drop my dynamic ratio slightly for kick starting plus the overlap is something a stock 48 cam lacks which will add mid and upper rpm power.

The casting numbers on the blocks are a -73 so they have unused oil supply holes which doesn't matter.

Standard pushrods without the top mounted lifters. I like the idea of the stock setup and I would run them in an instant if I thought they were perfected. Not sure why they didn't work so well back then, was it lack of oil pressure or just the design fell short? They are being reproduced again so maybe they figured it out? Im running a different oil pump drive ratio now so supply and return will be increased somewhat, maybe thats all they need to work as intended.

I found some time to work on the bike this afternoon, life has been getting in the way lately.

Front engine guard on, I believe it's 47 (maybe not) and 48 only and I can see its seen some excitement in the past. It has a few imperfections in it that I left alone and no filler on the bar. It has an ever so slight wow near the upper mount that you can see when its off the bike but it fit good and its not repop. Same with the rear, it has some history. A friend of mine was over, he's had his fair share of bikes and been to judged events. He said if he's looking at a restored bike and everything looks new it probably is, implying reproduction parts and hardware.

Foot board on, brake pedal, front exhaust lower clamp to frame on, lifter blocks in, changed cam cover screws to parkerized as they should be. Thats it, need to eat and relax before the grind tomorrow.

I had an oh sh*t moment a few weeks ago and checked that, thats why its sitting right there. It went in no problem but I wont make that oversight again.

I guess its the later heads with more fin area where that would become an issue. My 62 I wouldn't get away with that I dont think.

Not all like some think they were made exact - and its a fin issue for sure later when the numbers changed you must install but the 30 pack crew snap fins off and not in a good way

reason black heads became very popular while still on the engine - i guess an oh $hit moment

Did some wiring this evening. It's a repop harness, I had no desire hunting down and using old oem wiring. I see the odd section show up on ebay but I just didn't want to go that route. Some of the wires are too long so I adjusted the length accordingly and replaced the ends and others had no terminals which were cut to length. It was really a waste for them to crimp terminals on that I had to cut off, they should just come loose in a bag with the harness.

I need to finalize routing and then tape the harness to the frame. I don't like that the factory tapes the front plug wire to the frame behind the left fuel tank so Im going to handle that a little differently.

I picked up a really good crimping tool in the summer, it completely shrinks the tube around the wire.

Had another oem cable here, one I didn't have to shorten but needed re-plating so I threw it in with a batch of cad parts. Turned out good.

Care to share a photo of said crimping tool and let us know who made it? Looks like it does a great job. MUCH better than my last attempt at making do with my current crimp tool!
