Ive never taken chrome off a valve cover on a car, I don't see why it would cause an issue here. I plan to use a small amount of grey sealant on the surfaces that I first started using back at Ford, pretty good stuff.

If Skyway Blue was still a used color in 1948, and I believe it was, I would go there instead of another black bike. Just one man's opinion, carry on.

Its not an option in 48. After more research last night on-line I was reading that for a $7.50 premium Harley would paint your bike any color you wanted. There were standard colors, optional colors and special order colors but Palmers book mentions 5 choices only. Im seeing more and more of those 1941 robin egg blue bikes like the ones I posted in another thread that are not Cruiser Green or Skyway Blue. Can't be coincidence, must've been a special order option.

Im trying to avoid black but if my choices are 5 options only, one being police silver then black with black rims it will go.

Skyway Blue was a 1941/1942-1946/1947 color. It would seem that as an "option" couldn't one get a prior year color on a special order?

I would say yes you could. The downside is at an AMCA event I need documents to say the bike was ordered with a non-standard color which of course also applies to the purist should I sell down the road.
