Default Panhead oil?

I'm gonna have alot of these posts guys, so please bare with me. My dads 49 Panhead. What oil do I use for changes? Is there anything better then others? What is my fill level in the tank? This thing has no fill line markers that I can find.

TIA! Sean-

20-50 will work just fine.
As for brand you pick it.
If you are fussy do a 20 min search on the net, you will readily find out who makes the best oil.
Someone will point you to the Fsm and it will say 50 or 60 weight, -but that is all they had back then.
The oil tank is full when hot and 3/4 to the top, I thought they had a dip stick?

I think the majority of panhead owners will strongly disagree with you on that.

50 or 60 wt Valvoline VR1 is fairly easy to find at parts stores.

My dads has no dip stick, its just a cap. 20-50 oil, synthetic, 50/50, regular? Just checking to see what my options are.

Lol, ok so no topping off. How do I monitor the level then? Where should it be cold? still 3/4? Seeing a lot of different responses on the oil type. 20/50, straight 50, then 60, then VR1? lol!

VR1 is a brand of 50 or 60 wt

Post another pic of that oil tank from the other side...I bet it is a softail tank...which means you could put a softail dip stick in it to monitor the level

.Oil is a religion. No reason or logic required for most people
IDC what you( use .(as i already explained)
I was using 20-50 oil B4 HD ever said it was OK and that was back in the 1970s when Penz oil first came out with it,
Nothing has blown up yet.
It just a better oil..(not necessarily Penx oil)
If you want to discuss it, I think there is a page on this forum just for oil and oil wars.
You ck the oil hot .
Engine off so you don't get tattooed.
