LA to Julian Good route?
We are going to be heading down to Julian on Sunday and I need help planning a route to get there. I have never been and have no idea what is a good way to go. We have a bunch of people coming from LA and then we will meet a few guys down in OC/SD county somewhere and then head over. Also, whats the best place to eat there? I want pie. Ramona cafe or something? I was thinking I could meet my OC buddies in Oceanside off the 5 and go from there. Thanks Guys!

First, you don't go "down" to Julian, you go "up" to Julian, LOL!
From Oceanside, take the 78 Freeway east to Escondido. (The freeway proper ends there.)
Then get on the 15 Freeway going south and exit at Via Rancho Parkway. Make a left on Via Rancho Parkway and then a right on San Pasqual Road. Follow that for a while and make a right on Old Pasqual Road. (Going this way will avoid all the weekend traffic at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.)
Old Pasqual Road will rejoin Highway 78 at the San Pasqual Battlefield. (Site where elements of the American Army and Marines battled the "Califonios" during the Mexican/American war in 1846.)
Keep following Highway 78 and you'll start going up what the locals call "the hill" to the town of Ramona. Be careful on this stretch. If you go off the road on the cliff side you'll die! There's plenty of passing areas so just be patient.
When you get to Ramona make a left on Main street. (This will still be Highway 78.) And follow it further up into the mountains until you get to Julian. Right before the main street in Julian there is a road house on the left that's a good stop. I forget the name of it, but you'll see a lot of bikes there if it's a weekend.
Julian is famous for it's apples and apple pie and there's several places along the main street to indulge if you want.
From Oceanside to Julian is about 70 miles and except for the first part on the freeways it's mostly all windy two lane roads. I think there's only one gas station in Julian so you may want to fill up in Ramona.
For your buddies coming up from San Diego they may want to meet you in Ramona as they can come up the "backside" of the hill from Poway rather than ride all the way north to Oceanside.

That's all wrong, you go Out to Julian.
I-5 to Ortega Hwy, East to I-15, South to Hwy 79 south, around lake Henshaw and down to Santa Ysabel(There is a gas station here also), Then East on Hwy 78 to Julian. Stop @ Mom's Pie House and grab a piece of The Apple/Cherry Crumb! There is the Rongbranch Cafe, or back on Hwy 76 (you'll pass it by lake Henshaw) there is the Hideout it's open on weekends.

Here is a route I took with a board member a while back.
It was a rainy day and the route up to Mountain Center looked toooooo gloomy. So at Hemet we cut down State St. and picked up again at hwy 79.

The best way to go from O'side is 76 you go passed the casino where there a gas station you can go up to Palomar mtn and back down the other side which puts you back onto 76 turn left go by Lake Henshaw turn right on 79 to next stop sign (Santa Ysabel) turn left it's 7 miles to Julian. In Julian there's a couple of restuarants that have ribs and whatnot and the good old Apple Pies.

Hiway 76 in Oceanside off the 5 will take you most of the way up. It starts out as four lanes and after a few miles cuts down to two. It goes past Fallbrook, past the Pala Casino, past Palomar Mountain turn off, past the Hideout (it's supposed to open on weekends but has been closed the few times I've been by recently but stop and check it out anyway, you'll see it on the right just past the Lake off Mesa Grande Rd) to the end at Hiway 79.
At 79 if you have a little spare time I'd go left to San Felipe Rd. just past the electric station with all the electric robot looking things. San Felipe Rd will dead end on Hiway 78. Make a right turn and it'll take you up to Julian, it's a nice winding two lane.
Or to save some time make a right on 79 instead. It will dead end on Hiway 78 in Santa Ysabel. Make a left on Hiway 78 and cruise up to Julian.
Food. The Pala Casino a few miles east of 15 on 76 has a good buffet. Santa Ysabel Casino off 79 just a few miles south of 76 has a good cafe. In Santa Ysabel there is a nice restaurant called the Apple something that is good and behind it is Julian Apple Pie, good rest stop if not to eat. Gas across the street is a good fill up spot. In Julian the Wrongbranch is ok. Get off the bikes and walk the town, you'll see something you guys will like.
Traffic on weekends can be tough on 78 going up or down the mountain. Enjoy the ride.

I live in Ramona and ride alot to Julian and also to LA......do you want the scenic or fastest route? I'm sure you want fastest,,,,,,5 south to the 78 east which takes you through part of the business district of Escondido, once you get out of Escondido,,the ride begins through the San Pasqual Valley(motorcycle country) and the windy road into Ramona. Go east at Main Street, a fews blocjs down on the right will be The Kountry Kitchen or Ramona Cafe are both great places for breakfast or lunch. As far as apple pie in Julian, there is Moms and Julian Pie,,,,,,,both awesome places,,,,,,Moms is in the heart of Julian, so the line will be three times longer than Julian Pie. Stay away from the Rongbranch Cafe, its a tourist place and the food is about the same as Bollweevil............enjoy the trip
