I'd prefer summer time since wind and rain is highly unlikely. But remember that CA rain is a sprinkle compared to the rest of the country so your main concern would be Washington and Oregon, places I don't know much about. sorry.

once you clear wash. oregon should be a breeze early to late summer
no cal can be a little like oregon but after shasta should warm up good
mid summer can be a little brutal from redding down so go over to the coast at redding or
even roseburg. have made this ride or most of it a couple of times and never had any
real bad weather. just get south of portland and enjoy..........

The Oregon coast is a really beautiful ride. Mid to late summer is best. I would avoid I-5 as much as possible if it were me. Take 101 south all the way through Oregon and into Northern CA. Cut over to highway 1 in Legget, CA. This will dump into Ft Bragg, which a great little town. You are less than 200 miles to San Francisco. Haven't ridden the coast in CA south of Mendocino so I don't have first hand knowledge, but I have driven I-5 and can tell you that is the last route I would take. I would stay on the coast. It will take a lot longer, but you will enjoy it so much more.

Bill-- I'll let you know what it's like in mid November since I'm going to be moving to San Diego/Orange County area in the 3rd week of November. I'm thinking I'll hit I-5 for a bit then cut across to 101 and make my way down. Try to wind around and back inland a bit to avoid SF area for the most part and then back to the coast. Once in LA area will connect 101 to 405 S and then connect back into I-5 after LA. That's the real early planned route. Weather expectations? NW = rain, so I'll have my gear, otherwise once south of Medford I think I'll be in good shape.

if you haave great weather by all means go the coast
otherwise use the super slab much easier to stay right side up and the coast can get very nasty
anytime of year ( lived on the oregon coast for 30 years)

Bill,

Since I recently moved to San Diego from Colorado I am not the expert on Socal weather, but I can tell you that the summer was beautiful, a bit warm inland but on the coast it was great. The weather has now changed a bit and I can wear full leathers and be comfortable or Just a jacket and some gloves in the morning, T-shirt in the afternoon. Like others have mentioned I think SoCal will be accommodating any time of year, it is the North west that will probably dictate the time of year you travel.
Good luck and let me know when you plan on being in town, we can get together for a ride, I have a decent garage at the house if you need to do a quick oil change, and a trailer just in case.
