OC to Julian route suggestions?
Thinking about doing a ride from HB to Julian. Looking at a map, I'm considering this route. Any inputs ??
- Down to Ortega Hwy (74) and up over to Lake Elsinore.
- Cont on the 74 thru Perris, Hemet, Idyllwild area, and on to the 371.
- S/W on the 371 to the 79.
- Down 79 to 78 and to Julian.
Then prob return straight down the 78 to the 5 and back home.
I havn't been on most of these roads. How's it shound??
Thanks

Thanks Primo
Yeah, I was kind of wondering about road conditions. Especially around the Idyllwild and San Jacinto Mtn areas.
I'm thinking we might do this in a week or two. But don't really want to if we may hit ice. One of our riders will be my 75yr old pop. hmmm...
Might need to reconsider or change the route a bit.

Last Sunday on the 74 eastbound, before Hell's Kitchen, the road was down to 1 lane each way for debris clearing, I'm sure that it is clear by now.
Off the 74 at Hemet, you can take the R3 down to the 79 and then onto Julian. I rode the R3 but turned west at the 79. There was some dirt across the R3, but it was not a problem. The 79 was clear to the 15.
You'll be heading east at the 79 for Julian, I was not on that part.

Not a bad route, one suggestion though, after you make the left at Dudleys. start looking for Wynola Road (it's a left) and follow that road until you get to Farmers Road, Turn right and that take you into Julian. If you miss Farmers Road, don't worry, Wynola Road ends on the Banner Grade, make a right at the T and that will take you back into town. Takes about 15 minutes total to ride this road, but one you won't forget. Nice country road but keep your speed down, twisty.
As for road conditions, everything is clear. Ice might be on the road in the early mornings. Wynola Road is a twisty road but not too many crotch rockets on it because of no guardrails. But do watch out for bicycles!
As for lunch, get out of Julian (overpriced) and go to Lake Cuyumuca (about 7 miles south of Julian) and the service is faster. If the temp is about 60, the deck will be open that has views of the lake.
Let me know when you'll be in the area, might just escort ya

I like your route but think it would be a much better ride if you took the 76 back. It's much more scenic and a real nice road. I have ridden your whole route more then a few times. The road just south of Idylwild is one of my favorites. I feel like I am somewhere far away when I ride it.
Oh and I agree with the above post about Wynola Rd. It's one of the best little detours you can make.
