Default Vancovuer BC, I-5, to Portalnd/Hwy 101

K, as per the title, I am looking for tips on weather and road conditions .
I can figure out I-5 to Portland, after that , what am I to expect West and South on Hwy101?
I am not looking to brake any speed records nor am I wanting to tango with the tin tenters. I figure we could be on the coast of Oregon by 6pm and be ready to poke along the Coast Hwy for a day or two.
Then when we cross in Cali, head East to the I-5 and head for the Nappa Valley so she can taste some wine.
Also, being so close to San Fransico, We could detour a couple hundred miles , just to ride over that Golden Bridge. I know, I am a glutten for punishment, but last time I was there was 1994 and on my bicycle
Thoughts and tribulations anyone close by the route?
Also, maybe a heads up on a contact or two for HD Service or a good indi wrench, should I need a tweak here or there?
We have played with the HD web site "Plan a Ride " and do find it pretty informative for distance and directions.I am thinking of using it as a general guide only.
Also, we would be staying at motels/hotels or even a bed and breakfast type of establishment.
Thanks All
Rob
oh, forgot to mention end of May, first week of June....

We did the same trip in 07 loved every day, foggy in the early morning a little damp at times, round a corner and the sun is out----odd temp variations, Coos Bay HD treated us well, did not need much but still very helpful.

This year we are going to slab it to Grant's Pass, stay a couple of days then,do some Redwoods, then south to Reno for Hot August Nites, meet friends from Edmonton-off to San Fran and home up the Pacific hwy and 101

Enjoy your vacation.

If you not in a big hurry and want to stay off the boring freeway you could try this route, beautiful scenery and much more relaxing. you would have to take a short ferry ride from Whidbey Island to Port Townsend. Its worth it. Either way enjoy your trip. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...943848&t=h&z=8

Nice scenery from Pt. Townsend, down along the coast and into Oregon.

Yes stay on 101 through CA till just north of Leggett and go down Hwy 1 to Ft Bragg. Keep going on 1 till the end at Tamalpais Valley just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Yes you can hit rain, wind, fog or sun on the coast all in 50 miles.

Check the WA state ferry web site so you don't get any suprises if you use them. If you decide to come down I-5 at Mt. Vernon, Skagit HD is a nice strech you legs, bathroom stop. If you are heading down the Calif coast and have time, I lived in Big Sur years ago and no better scenery then down the Coast Hwy Monterey area, Santa Cruz. You can so south out of Frisco and all the way south to LA. Beautiful scenery but can be damp, foggy, Windy road south of Big Sur. Oh yeah, Fortuna, Eureka, Arcata areas are cute little towns. Arcata is a college town so lots of good eats and you'll go right thru Eureka. Fortuna is a bit off the hwy but a fun little town with lots of old Victorians. Be sure to take the Avenue of the Giants; redwoods galore and the avenue parallels the main hwy so not too out of the way. Hope you have a great trip; I'm jealous! Be safe! Let us know how it goes!

Just read your question, 2 friends and myself, came back from Sturgis, to Oregon coast, rode the 101 alway to LA, all type of weather in August, we stop by Coos Bay HD, they set us up with a 20% discount at Best Western motel for the night and made the res for us, that was great, but rode over the Golden Gate and through San Francisco, which was very interesting! Have a good time it's a good ride.
