Well the smoke is pretty bad around The King City area.My wife and I went to Salinas last weekend and you could see the plume of smoke from the fire.
If you come up 101 there is a great backroad ride fom Gonzalas to Carmel.I think it's Arroyo Seco Rd.The smoke may be really bad in that area due to proximty of the fire.

It's looking more and more likely that I'll have to come up the 101.... Can you give me the route to best take off the 101 to get to Monterey, the Gonzalas to Carmel route....

Sorry it's Greenfield.
Take 101 north to Greenfield.Turn left on Elm.Left on Arroyo Seco Rd.This will take you to Carmel Valley,then Carmel Hwy. 1.
Nice mtn rd with lots of turns.
You can see directions on Map Quest.I think the fire is south of this route.I would check road conditions.

And from Santa Maria Times:
 \\;
The north part of highway is scheduled to reopen at 6 p.m. at Big Sur, according to officials from Caltrans. However, a 17-mile section from Big Sur south will remain closed through Saturday.
Officials hope to have the highway completely reopened by 8 a.m. Sunday, as long as there are no other fire incidents.
