EZJ....I got your email last night but the connection here in Kuwait is a bit flaky and I couldnt email back. I'd be happy to ride up there with the OL, sounds like a nice weekend of fun and riding. I've never made it up that far north, usually do Tahoe and south. Thanks for the email!

First Labor Day bike rally in the works
By BRAD SMITH

Siskiyou County Sheriff Rick Riggins and Karl Greiner, Yreka’s special events coordinator, discuss aspects of the proposed Labor Day bike rally.

Daily News Staff Writer

YREKA - The upcoming fifth annual 2008 Farside Run will be part of something bigger this year - the inaugural ’Shasta Salute to America’ bike rally, according to event co-founder Sheriff Rick Riggins.

Riggins said that the Siskiyou County Veterans Service is joining forces with South Bay Biker Productions to put on the event.

’The rally has the potential to be not only the best motorcycle enthusiast event in the state,’ he said, ’but also the biggest.’

The idea of forming a larger event around the annual Labor Day weekend Farside Run was conceived when Riggins and the other Farside Run co-founders, Undersheriff Mike Murphy and county veterans service representative Mark Dean, met with Jeff Kraus of South Bay Biker Productions.

A biker himself, Kraus formed South Bay years ago to film documentaries about fellow bikers, their traditions and the large rallies they attend.

Riggins and the others discovered that, over the years, Kraus had acquired a lot of contacts in both the entertainment and biker communities.

Riggins said that he and Murphy and Dean had always wanted to turn the Farside Run into a ’large, popular event," and figured Krause to be "just the guy who could help us."

Kraus was attracted to the idea, in part, because the Farside Run honors veterans and peace officers.

’People who wore the uniform often make the ultimate sacrifice,’ Kraus said.

The more they talked with Kraus, the more convinced he became that it would be good for the four of them to join forces.

On Friday morning, Kraus and South Bay Biker Productions’ vice president Debbie Johnson met with local business owners and motorcycle enthusiasts to discuss event details.

The event will start Aug. 28 and last through Sept. 1, with the fairgrounds hosting the main events. Tent and RV camping sites will be available.

Kraus said he is working on getting the traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial and other veteran memorials to the event.

Johnson said that they want to work with local businesses and vendors to ensure that "a lot of people" benefit from the rally. Business owners and vendors interested in being a part of the rally can learn more by checking the Web site, http://www.shastasalutetoamerica.com, she added.

’When Jeff and I came up here to look around,’ Johnson said, ’we were amazed at the way we were welcomed.’

Both she and Kraus commented that business owners and the people they encountered on Yreka’s streets, as well as elsewhere in the county, were "nice, warm and friendly people.’

Johnson said that she and Kraus had discussed making a one year commitment to the fairgrounds to use the property, but decided to make a six-year commitment instead.

’We’re not just getting our feet wet, we’re taking a plunge in the deep end,’ she said.

Kraus said that South Bay is committed to making the Labor Day rally a "major event.’ He is already lining up an array of country-western and rock bands to play at the rally, and is looking for great local talent as well.

He and Johnson said they are ’working closely’ with both Yreka’s city government and with the county to make the rally a success.

’We want this to work and we want to cooperate with everyone in order to do so,’ he said.

Riggins is looking forward to hel
