Making the switch to Mobil 1
After over 15 years without a bike I bought a used 04 Road King Classic at the end of June. Wasn't planning on it, just happened. Isn't the internet amazing? Also wasn't planning on gong to Sturgis, but I lucked into that too. It's been a good year.
I've read most of the oil related posts as well as talked to other riders and have made the switch to Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50 from Harley dino. I do believe the motor is a bit more quiet. I changed the tranny lube, but I'm not sure what the previous owner was using. It came out the drain plug looking like a pink slightly foaming liquid (the bike was fairly hot when I pulled the plug, just back from an afternon ride). Any ideas what lube would lok like this?? I replaced it with Mobil 1 70W-90. By the way Auto Zone had both products in stock, $8/quart oil and $8+/quart for the lube(limited supply however).
Based on the comments in the posts I will be changing the primary lube with the stock Harley product. Thanks for the web site and the great posts from the members. This is great resource for a new owner like me.
Having almost as much fun working on it as I am riding. Well maybe it's not all that close, but fun just the same.[sm=smiley16.gif]

The pink foamy stuff was more than likely redline shock proof heavy. It's much better than most engine oils for use in the transmission. Another good trans oil is the mobil 1 75/90 synthetic.
BTW Your combo of M1 v twin, HD primary, and redline in the trans is a great combo.

RE: Making the switch to Mobil 1
Me too. Just changed to Mobil 1 Vtwin yesterday. Put in Mobil1 in the tranny about a week ago, and used some Rev Tech for the primary (it is what a local bike shop carries and the stealer is too far downtown). Might go with Mobil 1 Gold cap next time thought, seems to be the same (almost) at 1/2 the price, and since most change at 2,500, we could probally run some cheap oil from wally world and be fine. Any one know if redline tranny is that much better than mobil 1?

RE: Making the switch to Mobil 1
Thanks for the information. Who carries Redline tranny fluid and how does the price compare to Mobil 1 gear lube?
Thanks again for all the replies.
PS - Today I learned from Stealer that the deby cover o-ring has been replaced by a one-time use crush gasket @ $7.88. This sounds like an extra expense at every fluid change. Does anyone have any insight on this detail?
