checking oil on stand or up level

Wet sump?
Not sure if you mentioned what type of bike you are dealing with but it’s possible that you have a dumping issue if you have a gravity feed oil tank. Because the bike is resting in an odd position the check valve may not be seating properly. Just some food for thought I’m not positive.

Two points to make here...
First: The thread is five years old.
Second: If you don`t have a clue as to what you are talking about, don`t post an answer.

For all we know. Big B nIndy may still waiting for an answer. All of the manuals I have seen says check engine oil with bike on jiffy stand. Hope this helps.

Except my 94 FXSTC manual says standing up. But who am I to argue with you.

Everyone needs to go by the manual for their model and year. As all things go. If you don't know if your ride needs oil you are SOL.

I believe most modern models have a cold level and a hot level marked on the engine oil dip stick.

Now wait a second here...let's not be so harsh on the guy that posted the first response. There is one thing that jumps out here , "dumping", is this something new that 20 year old motorcycles have just started doing and you're on the pioneering edge of this discovery? Let us know.
