RE: Dealer Said Warranty Void
Dang, these things just won't roll over and die!
If a dealer says a correct grade of synthetic oil voids the HD warranty then ask him to put it in writing. He won't.
Then tell him he really needs to better understand the physics of lubrication, and maybe a little about federal law concerning warranties.
Then thank him for entertaining you and find another shop for your muttersickling work, parts, etc.
Bear has posted the pertinent information that will resolve any questions concerning the use of synthetic oil and warranties. And Tim's postings above also have pertinent info. The Scanlon letterhas pertinent info in it, but it's written in an obfuscatory manner clearly intended to confuse rather than shed light. Harley ain't known for clarity when they know they might lose a dime or two.

RE: Dealer Said Warranty Void
My dealer has never given me grief about Amsoil, or any other oil or gear lube. They also sell BelRay besides the HD stuff. I guess Im lucky, but they basically have told me they will stick with me regardless. Case in point.....recently, on a Saturday evening about 7:00 pm, I found my A/C filter was damaged while I was doing a pre-ride check for a Sunday event. I called my HD salesman to see if he could give me some cross reference info so that I could go to a local parts store and find something to make do until they opened again on Monday. The salesman told me to meet him at the store....on a Saturday night after 7:00 pm...and he gave me the filter.......yep, gave it to me. Said that thing shouldnt be showing wear much less damage with less than 5000 on the bike. Now, the salesman is also the GM of the dealership.
I guess some dealers will do whatever to make the cash....mine does whatever to make the lasting friendship and business relationship.

The dealer at which I purchased my bike sells Royal Purple products, on a rack right next to the HD Syn3. In fact, they are recommending the RP gear oil for the tranny's. (I run Redline Super heavy)

RE: Dealer Said Warranty Void
Guys, let me shed a little input speaking from a parts salesman that works on the "other" side of the partscounter. I work for a multi-franchise dealer. We sell 4 different brands of oil, and we will always initiallySUGGEST running the bike specific brand of oil, simply because it's what's recommended by the mfg, and keeps things simple when selling oil. If a customer want's to run Golden Spectro 10W50 in his Harley thats NO problem as long as the fluidspecs match. It is ILLEGAL for any dealer to void a warranty based upon a customer using an aftermarket oil. In my 11 years working for a dealer, I have yet to see any type of engine failure as a result from using and aftermarket oil vs. a mfg. suggested oil. Furthermore for a dealer to actually PROVE that an aftermarket oil caused engine failure would be virtually impossible, and VERY bad buisiness. I suppose it would be possible to prove if some idiot put 80/90 hypoid gearoil in his TC88 engine, but other than that extreme example, it really can't be proved.

Federal Warranty Laws
1.The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(C))
This federal law regulates warranties for the protection of consumers. The essence of this law concerning aftermarket auto parts is that a vehicle manufacturer may not condition a written or implied warranty on the consumers using parts or services which are identified by brand, trade, or corporate name (such as the vehicle makers brand) unless the parts or service are provided free of charge. The law means that the use of an aftermarket part alone is not cause for denying the warranty. However, the law's protection does not extend to aftermarket parts in situations where such parts actually caused the damage being claimed under the warranty. Further, consumers are advised to be aware of any specific terms or conditions stated in the warranty which may result in its being voided. The law states in relevant part:
“No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumers using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name....” (15 U.S.C. 2302(C)).
2. Clean Air Act Warranty Provisions (42 U.S.C. S 7541 (C) (3) (B))
The federal Clean Air Act requires vehicle makers to provide two emissions-related warranties -- a production warranty and a performance warranty. The production warranty requires the vehicle maker to warrant that the vehicle is designed, built and equipped so that it conforms with emissions requirements at the time of sale. The performance warranty requires the vehicle maker to warrant that the vehicle will comply with applicable emissions requirements as tested under state vehicle emissions inspection programs for the warranty periods specified in the law (for model year 1995 and later vehicles, the warranty is 2 years/24,000 miles for all emissions-related parts and 8 years/80,000 miles for the catalytic converter, electronic emissions control unit and on-board diagnostic device). The performance warranty is conditioned on the vehicle being properly maintained and operated.
Like the Magnuson-Moss Act, vehicle manufacturers may not refuse warranty repairs under the Clean Air Acts performance and defect warranties merely because aftermarket parts have been installed on the vehicle. The only circumstance under which the vehicle manufacturer can void the emissions warranties is if an aftermarket part is responsible for (causes) the warranty claim.
