Why 3 holes?

It's HD's design...that's the way they wanted to keep it. i like to be able to use a Automotive type oil in the engine and not having to change the Primary until 10000 miles and the tranny every 20000 miles...is there a real advantage to having a chared box like the Metrics other than using 1 fluid? Not sure either, i have had both and i don't ask, i just ride.

I had read the same question on italian forum
I think that is an HD's design, too. But 3 holes are better than one when you must changes only one oil... and so you can empty the primary, the motors oil or transmission without emptying them together. I change primary and motors at 8.000 km (I don't know how many mils) and transmission oil at 16000 km

No advantage.....very old engine design from the 1920's-30's. Most all newer engine designs have shared sumps. Easier to service for sure. My Tbird takes 6 quarts of 10w50 oil and a small black spin on oil filter. Super easy to change oil.
