Is there such a thing as AP1 oil grade? I've heard of API service oil.

 

API = American Petroleum Institute. Sets standards for the oil industry.

There is no API rating for motorcycle oils. Gear oils are rated Gl-1 thru Gl-5. Harley's synthetic oil, as well as any other that says it can be used in motorcycle transmissions,are supposed to meet the standard for a Gl-1 rated gear oil standard. If you check any bottle of "motorcycle oil", you won't find the API symbol on the bottle. It might say it meets a certain rating like SG or SM, but there's nothing that says it absolutely has to.,,

 

AP1 is a Honda S2000 engine. There is no AP1 grade oil.
