First 5K oil change - a mess

RE: First 5K oil change - a mess
Yeah, my first filter was on a bit tight (dealer install) and I had some trouble getting it off with my oil filter do-dad. With some perseverance, it came lose. Getting the old filter out of the wrench was another story!!
I had anticipated buying the HD tool, but as long as this one keeps working (probably just jinxed myself), I'll stick with it.
Thanks for the tip.

I use the box the filter came in. Flatten it and slide it under and around the filter and then crease the box on the drain end so the oil has a trail to run down into the catch pan. Works great.

Lots of good info here.. I'm getting ready to change the oil in mine this afternoon, the first time doing it
myself on my Road Glide.. I do like the flattened box... I will definitely try that..

All I have too say is I LOVE THIS FORUM!!!!
Because of the fact that I have started reading this thread I was able to do an oil change on my Ultra last night, AND didn't spill a drop of oil!! Even around the filter! I couldn't imagine what it would have looked like without all of the tips here!
Thanks a TON all!! Hope to be around here for a LONG time to come!

I catch it in a paint roller pan. Then I pour that into my oil container that I take to the auto parts store for recycling.

Did you ever notice that the oil always seems to drip where the pan isn't?[:@]

I got the best way. Replace your drain plug with a pop in on a string. Then your drive over to your buddy house that owns a non-hog a
& pull the string while you drive off. Then stop, pop in the plug, put some old back in & your on your way! No hassles!

They also make oil filters with a hex head on the end that you can get a crescent/open end wrench onto. An oil change guy put one on my Fat Boy Myrtle Beach bike week. Another possible suggestion if the oil isn't super hot; the plastic paint roller pan liners. Chuck'em when you're done instead of cleaning a metal roller pan.

Did my oil change on a lift. Used the coke bottle trick that read about here, no mess at all. It was easier then changing the oul in my car.
