mysterious... or am i just an idiot?
hello all...
i've changed the oil in my '06 heritage several times before... successfully... but something really strange happened over the weekend and i cannot figure it out... i probably should just let the dealership change it but now i'm too far into this and hope someone here can help me out.
i drained the oil from the back plug... i thought it was the oil plug... but only about a 1/2-cup came out... i thought it was strange, but went on ... i replaced the plug and started to add oil... after about 1-1/2 quarts i realized it was probably the transmission fluid i had drained... ??? so i stopped. i then took off the front plug (oil?) and about 3 quarts came out... then i replaced that plug.
i added 24 oz of Syn3 to the transmission and then went to add more oil to the main oil pan... only to see there was still oil in there... ? what gives? it is obviously the new oil because it's clear... i don't understand how it could have stayed in there if i drained it?
anyway, i'm not a mechanic (obviously) and any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Well first before you ride away with a dry sump make sure you have oil in all 3 holes. Then go to your dealer and get a service manual which will have pics of each drain. (your owners manual may have this as well) Then if you are still challenged color each plug a different color with your OL's nail polish and write it down. If this is still to much to digest than maybe having your dealer service your bike is really the way to go.
Oh, btw, the plug where only 1/2 cup came out was probably a case plug which is not supposed to be removed and should be red loctited back in.
But do get a service manual. Best $60 you will spend if you continue to work on your bike.
