Default Oil Change - 2006 Sportster 1200 XL

I need an oil change really bad (I've stopped riding until I can get it changed to protect my engine) but I can't afford to take it in and have it done by Harley Davidson. I really want to be able to do it myself, and have found some info on how to do it online, but one thing I can't seem to find is a hint/tip/trip for getting the oil cap back in place. I've even seen professional mechanics struggle with it.

I don't want to get it out and then not be able to get it back in.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

TB; the Sporty oil tank cap can be a tricky devil & best advice I can offer is to pop it up (push & it comes up) & twist slowly to the Left. Once you get it out - look at the grooves (cap/stick & tank). Want to match everything up & re-install in reverse order. I'd have to say it's probably the hardest part of your oil change - rest is a breeze. Good luck!

When you wipe off the dipstick before reinstalling, make sure you have a little oil on the rubber o-ring that seals it in the tank. If you try to install after wiping the o-ring dry, sometimes it's harder than hell to turn. Lube the o-ring and it'll screw in easier.
