Change oil, but not filter?

Change oil, but not filter?
Anyone ever do this? Here's my story...
Stealer last changed oil at 5,300 miles (SE Synthetic). I didn't get a chance to change out oil before parking for the winter, and I parked it with 8,900 miles, or 3,600 miles on the oil.
So, now it's late winter in Minnesota, and I'm bored as hell and wanted to play with the bike today, so I changed the oil, but not the filter. I will be bringing in the bike to the dealer for the 10K service, because I have a prepaid service plan, but I probably won't get it in there until around 11,000 miles.
My question is: does anyone just change the oil and not the filter? The manual says to change oil at 5,000 miles. I like the idea of more frequent changes, and it seems to me that you could change oil only at 2,500 miles, and then do the full filter and oil at 5,000 miles.
Your thoughts?
P.S. - it was SO fun to fire up the bike for the first time since early November!

myself, i would change filter twice and oil once. Just changing oil would allow the dirty oil from the filter contaminate the clean oil. I've got 252000 miles on my car and usually change filter at 2500 and oil and filter at 5000. Never a problem.

OK
I was told once that as the oil goes through the filter, and contaminents get caught in the filter media, the oil filter improves its filtration ability as the bigger holes get plugged, and since you only have 3600 miles on the new filter, it is in its "filter prime" right now, so ti won't hurt a thing.

Well for what's it worth, here's my two cents. Oil change and filter change always at the same time. I love my scoot and I'm willing not to gamble on a filter to work. Everyone has their opinion such as mine. I'm willing to be wrong. So far, it's paid off to follow thru with changing both. Either way, ride safe, have fun. Support our men and women who serve.
