newbie question re EFI Stage 1
hi everyone. just got a 2001 fatboy. the bike has the original pipes on it, but also has the "stage 1" done from harley. i want to put on vance and hines big radius pipes and im wondering if i can simply swap pipes or will i have to have everything tuned also.
if someone wants to take a minute to explain exactly what the stage 1 work actually is and what it does for me, and also answer me as to whether i can just simply swap pipes, i would really appreciate it.
thank you in advance

RE: newbie question re EFI Stage 1
You can swap JUST pipes and do nothing else and be OK, if you open up the intake (different filter etc.) then you must remap the ecm. If you have the stage 1 from harley , chances are that you have been remapped allready if they knew what they were doing.(don't laugh) The dealer should be able to hook up to your bike and tell you what download you have in the ECM,(advisable) usually they will not charge for this , but some do. The stage 1 download, richens up the fuel , slight ignition adjustments and raises the rev limit to 6200, and lightens your pocket by about $150. Check with the previous owner if you can and see if the download was done for sure, it will save you some grief.

yup. the stage 1 was done im sure... the bike came with the harley dealer receipt. it looks like they put on a screaming eagle air filter or something... so thats why they did the stage 1? onyhoo.... with the stage 1 i can just pop on the new pipes and be good? if thats the case, thank you!

Don't confuse the stage 1 airfilter with the stage 1 download for the ECM , this is what I refer to, if you have that ,Yep, go for it! (just be sure it is the stage 1 download)
Good luck

According to the HD parts book, you are going to gain about 10 HP at 5,000RPM, and 10 ft lbs torque at 4,000 RPM. You will not give up any low end torque, in fact there will be some gain. You are also going to have a better sounding bike than with stock mufflers.
