Default Do You Burn Oil??

Do you have to add oil between oil changes?

I have put about 2000 miles on bike and oil has gone from Full to half way down to the add line. I'm thinking of adding oil now with the thought of the more oil in there more oil to dispurse heat.

I add oil as necessary, but I usually don't fill it above halfway up the dipstick. I'd leave it where it is. If it was truely full you probably lost some out the breathers.

My old Evo has always used a bit of oil. It seems to depend on the ambient temperature. Below 65 degrees, the engine uses a negligable amount, but in hot weather, she might go through a pint every 2000 miles. It IS an air-cooled engine, after all.

I top off the oil as necessary. On my bike, I've tried running the oil level low and high, and it makes absolutely no difference in how much oil is puked out the breathers. Running the oil level low DOES make the engine run a bit hotter, and use more oil, so I keep her topped of.

Are you checking the oil hot on the jiffy and allowing 4-5 minutes after shut down for the oil to return to the tank? If not, try that.

I have a 2008 FLHTC. I keep the oil level at the mid point of the dip stick. I don't have to add any oil between changes. Try not adding any oil, monitor the oil level and see if it drops any more. My guess is that it won't.

Using 1/2 qt at 2000 is normal. No need to add.

Are you checking the oil level correctly? On Softails the correct way to check the oil is with the bike straight up, NOT on the jiffy stand.

With the bike warm, let it sit for about 5 minutes. Take out the dipstick, clean it off, and replace it.

Sit on your bike and slowly bring it straight up, then back on to the jiffy stand.

The oil will 'stick' to the dipstick, giving you the correct level in the tank. Remove the dipstick and check the oil level.

I realize this is an old post but you do check the oil level on a softail when it is on the jiffy ( sidestand ) not when it is straight up.
