Oil Spattering out of Dipstick
Hi,
I have a 2006 Softail. I replaced the stock oil dipstick with the manual oil temp gauge sold by Harley. I have noticed that a lot of oil seems to spatter out. Does anyone have any suggestions. I do likie the way this dipstick looks.
Thanks for your advice. Jason

RE: Oil Spattering out of Dipstick
I had my oil cap "popping" off and spraying oil all down the side of my bike ('06 Nightrain). I asked every HD tech I could find at Bike Week about this and none had a clue.
My buddy in Florida told me to add an o-ring to the stock oil cap... but, since I had a new bike, I said no.
Two more incidents and I took mine to the dealer. They called Harley and got nothing. They replaced my new, danling dip stick with the old style straight one with an o-ring.
Worked like a champ.
I think there are tolerance problems with the necks on the oil tanks (quality control... or lack thereof, actually) and since there is no pressure relief valve in Harley's oil pumps, then you get a pressure imbalance between the supply and return side of the tank when you are riding at higher speeds, racing, whatever. You may have a slight misfit... and any pressure build up would cause it to spit oil.
Try a different oil dipstick by taking back the one that you have and hope the tolerance problem is in the dipsticks instead of the tanks?

I just replaced my stock dipstick with the same one you did on my 03 FLSTCI. Guess what, rode it today for about 100 miles and noticed a drip running from the cap down the side of the chrome tank. What's up with that. I guess I'll do what was suggested and take it back for another one and see if that helps. What a bunch of s**t for a $30.00 part.

I ride a 05 Heritage Heritage Softail and have the original oil cap with no leaks, I just bought my wife a 03 Anniversity with a voyager kit, It has the oil cap with the temp . She rode it to the mountains for the first time Sat and when sh got there I could see oil on the tank and bag. I asked the guy we bought it from and he said all softails do it. Well you can snow a snow bird but you can't sh** a sh** bird.. IT"S THE CAP. Another quality part manufactured in China........Rusty1
