Default Primary Oil or ATF fluid??

I have heard that you can use ATF fluid in the primary
the comparision between automatic trannys have clutch plates and chains too.
I use primary oil from HD ....but I was wondering about the ATF theory

General consensus says it's ok to use ATF - not type F - for a while but not permanently. It can loosen up sticky clutch plates sometimes.

It's generally hard on seals. Why - I don't know.

I read some stuff on here about guy's using the ATF (the GM brand) in the primary and liking the way it made there clutch perform.
I use Amsoil 20w50, 85K miles no clutch trouble and never had to adjust the primary chain tensioner.

I use Amsoil ATF, no problems here.

Use either. I use redline MTL which is manual trans 70w80 gear oil that pours like a thick atf. Works fine. Some guys use 10w40 oil some use 15w40 oil.

I would be worried about excessive wear on the chain and gears. How about any long term effects on the stator? To spent $2 for a qt of trans fluid and possibly cause $500 worth of wear to other parts, just because a few guys said it was ok on the internet isn't something I'll be doing.,,

Many manual trannys in cars and trucks use Dexron atf. I think it defies logic, but it is supposed to reduce drag and be more efficient. I have seen them after 5 years of rough use, with no obvious signs of wear. I don't think it will hurt, it has more detergent in it and can clean the internals better. Ultimately, it is your choice. What does your mechanic think?

I have heard some theory a higher than average stator failure in bikes using ATF. The theory is that the ATF eats the varnish off the stator's windings. Kinda makes sense, since ATF is known to be a great cleaning agent....Just a theory I heard. Don't shoot the messenger.

There's only two places I'll ever use ATF. One, in an automatic transmission. Two, added to motor oil 500 miles prior to tearing down the engine (great gunk cleaner). I have a Ford F250 with a manual transmission. Ford recommends ATF - in a manual transmission! I switched to a drive train fluid instead, and it's never shifted better, 99,600 miles. Did the same in my FXSTD primary - drive trail fluid designed for that purpose, not ATF.

I use Bel-Ray primary chain case lube. It is actually the same as the Gearsaver 80w that I use in my motocross bike. It's just re-labled in a different bottle. Works great in both bikes.
