Best Oil for your Harley

RE: Best Oil for your Harley
Take a little time and do some more research. NCBrew knows his business. The HD synthetic may not be what you want. The HD dealership should be accommodating with your choice of oil in the service department, but do your homework and show them that you know what you are talking about.

After reading this topic and doing a little research it seems like all the recommendations are for using synth oil in the V-twins but I haven't seen any recommendations for my 1200C. Any advice on this...it seems like synth is the way to go but...

RE: Best Oil for your Harley
NcBrew, I thank you for the post with my quote, just kidding, but the reason I put 20w-50 in all three hole's because that's what the dealer said to put in. I have read some concern's about that but I feel it's just like anything else, nobody like's change. So for now that's what I'm going to run until I'm convinced otherwise,or the dealer advise's me to change. Thank's again for the info.

RE: Best Oil for your Harley
New here, so bear with me while I get my feet wet. I use 15w-50 Mobil 1 red cap (not the overpriced V-Twin version) in my '87 Sloptail. Use it in the engine and primary. I use Castrol synthetic 70-90 gear oil in the tranny. Was going to switch to Mobil 1 in the tranny, but started reading some "horror" stories on a couple other boards from HD mechs on trannies failing when using the motor oils, HD synth included. The mechs pretty much thought the problem was the oil. Anyway, I am staying with the gear oil.
My Sloptail has over 100k miles on it. I replaced the base gaskets last winter and could still see the hone marks all around my cylinders. I'm sold on synthetic, especially with riding in the heat as I do here in Texas. Any good synthetic will work fine. I like Mobil 1 'cause I get a 5 quart jug for less than $20. I don't use the V-Twin version 'cause I've seen chemical composition test results that show little difference between the two. I change all 3 holes every 2500 - 3000 miles. Also use NAPA filters. They're made by Wix and are excellent filters for a reasonable price.

BClem,
Tell me what you know about Red-Line 20W60HD. Do you have any test info? I'm in Texas and use it when it gets in the 80s and above (which is over 3/4 of the yr).
I put about 20K-25K a yr so no prob running 20W50 when its cold since I cange oil every 5K which is about 4-5 times a yr.
Thanks,
Wake
