Get a strap wrench (Nylon Band with a square drive end).... on the cheap, and it works good....

Get it at most Auto Parts stores.....

Don't try to use an automotive type metal band/compression type....

Big Channel locks, remove old filter, replace with K&N filter. Never need a wrench again.

K&N oil filter has a 17mm nut made into the top of the can and its a much better filter. Just don't overtighten it when you install. The metal of the can will distort if you have to apply a lot of torque to it. A 6 point, 17mm combination wrench works better if you turn it over so that the handle angles away from you. Always smear good oil on the O-ring and make sure the old oil filter's O-ring didn't stay on the filter housing. My brother changed his filter before a trip once and when he got back he noticed the O-ring wasn't on the old filter - it was stacked up under his new filter and could have blown out.

K&N is available through catalogs. I order about 10 at a time so I don't have to hunt for one when I change oil.
