Oil Preferance and HD Warranty
#11
I just got off the phone with the FTC and they said yall misunderstood the Act. If HD says you have to have HD products on the bike then its a company policy and if you dont use HD products then HD does not have to warranty the bike. Straight from the horse`s mouth so to speak! So there is something to be said for HD oil after all.Guess we will be running HD oil for sure.We wanna make sure our warranty is intact. If you have any questions just call the FTC.

Sounds like you just got off the phone with the Harley dealer...
HD can set all the company policies it wants, but it can`t change the law.

I have yet to hear of an oil related failure in a Harley Engine. If you use the oils that most of the guys on this forum use there is no way you are going to have an oil related failure. HD engines usually fail from bad components like bearings, crank, tensioner shoes, oil pumps, etc. which are all parts designed by HD and well lubricated by any 20w50 or 15w50 or 15w40 heavy duty or MC JASOMA rated oil.
If anyone has toasted a motor by using any of the following oils please post it:
Mobil1 Vtwin 20w50
Mobil1 15w50
Amsoil MCV 20w50
Redline 20w50
Royal Purple Maxcycle 20w50
Spectro 20w50
Brad Penn 20w50
Lubeatech 20w50
Valvoline Vtwin 20w50
Havoline 20w50
Shell Rotella 15w40
Chevron Delo 400 15w40
Mobil Delvac 15w40
NOT going to happen........the engine components fail but not from poor lubrication.

Did they mention that if HD oil is the only oil that can be used in the bike, they have to supply it free of charge? That is a point Harley was hoping no one would be wise to, and buy their oil out of fear. Harley is vague as far saying what other then a SG or diesel oil can be used as they want you to use their oil. So any oil with a SG api rating or newer will work fine, so don't feel bullied into buying Harley's oil. Use what you want.,,
And this. Otherwise, every vehicle manufacturer would make it "company policy" that you must use nothing but dealer items for repair/maintenance.

Thanks to all for your input/opinions. At $13 Cdn a quart for Syn 3, I know there are lubs out there that are as good or better for less money. I just don't want to compromise the life expectancy of my ride for the sake of a few bucks...
