Oil pumping out from air cleaner vent
Hi all,
1st post. Looks like a great forum. Wouldnt you know a problem led me to it....
Ok, so after 6 years of being dorment I finally decided to pull out my 85' Low Glide 1340, give her a new battery and crank her over. After about three trys, my son shows me the huge stream of oil running down the side of the engine and flowing out across the pavement. Removal of the air cleaner revealed the breather was litterly pumpen oil, 1/2 into the carb, and 1/2 on the drive. No oil left in the tank as it all went out on threw the breather.
It's been a while, and I've never had ANY problems with this machine since day one. Now I'm wondering where to start taking things apart. Any ideas on the main suspect would be appreciated.
Thanks. Mike

RE: Oil pumping out from air cleaner vent
As far as a I know, if oil is coming out threr then there's too much oil in the motor. At least that's what I know of, it could be something else though

RE: Oil pumping out from air cleaner vent
That seems to be the standard answer, but in this case, too much oil is not the problem. The level in the tank us actually low. The tube from the breather runs down to the rear of the crank case. The problem seems to be that the return from the crank case to the oil tank is blocked, or not working. Lost the maintenance manual and am trying to figure the flow.
I took out the check ball and pressure releif, but dont see a problem there. Somethings plugged with gunk due to years & years of sitting in the garage.
Ok so where can I find an oil flow diagram for an 85' Evo 1340? (FXRS)??

Elevmike, Did the bike sit for 6 years with oil in the tank? If the answer is yes, the oil mearly seeped past the check ball and ended up in the crank case only to be blown out the breather when you started it up after its looooooong nap. This also would be the reason the oil level was low. All you really need to do is start the bike and let it run till its warm, drain the remaining oil fill with new oil and filter and you should be good to go. In the future should you decide to store your bike longer than 6 months drain the oil and leave yourself a note to add oil when you take it out of storage............BG

Thanks, BigGeorge,
That makes the most sense.
It was a busy six years with 4 new kids and all.. I used a plastic tube today to direct the spill into a bottle and kept crankin. Time hasnt been kind. There's rust in the gas tank and even though I have fuel at the carb, there's none going through it. Tires are badly cracked, and the covering is comming off the handle bar grips. Lot's to do...

Drain all the OLD gas, empty carb. Clean everything out.

You need to completely gumout the gas tank & carb. I would flush the crankcase, primary, trans with some cheap dino oil. Plus replace everything that is rubber and has any signs of cracks especially critical things like tires, brake hoses, fuel lines. Wow...6 years and it started. Amazing.

Crank Vent
I had the same issue after sitting for a few months, it always does it. Dry sumping I believe. I want to remove the crank vent but am not sure where to hook the hoses too, or what do do. I changed the oil, drained the gas ect...with the air filter off i can see spray coming out where the hose is hooked up. I want it off, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
