I was thinking about it also, but havn't tried it yet. I would like to here from someone who has installed one and monitored the oil temperature of the bike.

While I dont have one, I remember reading a post that basically called that product BS, I dont think HD even makes that part anymore, and you have to wonder just how it can really cool things down seeing its just covering the oil filter, I would be suspicous.

I bought a cool collar for my '06 Dyna (for testing purposes) and it does lift **some** heat from the oil filter plus it looks nice. Can you feel a difference? Not really. Is it a replacement for an oil cooler. No way.

I still added the HD premium oil cooler and there is no doubt the engine is running way cooler then before. So I run them both on my bike. Can't hurt right?

For the price, the cool collar's polished billet looks 'trick' and fits tight. Cheaper then the decorative Ness filter covers and you even might get a few degrees out of it.

It's not a cooler, it's a heat sink. In order for a heat sink to work, it has to be in full contact with whatever it's pulling the heat from. The lip on cover only comes in slight contact with the filter case, in only a couple of points. The air gap left between the sink and the case will insulate the filter; that's how your double pane windows work. If you filled the void with heat transfer grease, it would work better.

I've seen some filter cases with cooling fins and a replacable filter element. They would work better.

This is true......for heat transfer there should be complete physical connection with the hot oil for heat to transfer through the metal to the air. Most likely very inefficient. IMO.

That was 17 years ago now!

My take is HD engines have an optimal running temperature and oil likes to be warm as well to flow. If you over cool the oil neither will not reach those temperatures.

Where I am a cooler would be some vanity devise and is not needed.

Holy thread resurrection Batman. I was excited to see the 2006 on the original post but usually somewhere between then and today there will be a few post mixed in over the years thereby taking it out of the running for record. While this is pretty darn impressive it is not a record breaker but it is in the top 5 ,slotting in at #4...congratulations Mr thread resurector guy you have accomplished a rare feat here. However there are no participation trophies here at hdforums.com and "we" only award "prizes" for first place but welcome to the greatest HD forum on the internet.

I'm impressed by anyone with enough common sense and determination to actually use the "search" feature. And, old thread resurrection can be useful at times. Good job Lostintennessee
