It takes around a minute or longer for the oil to get through all the galleries and to all the lubricated parts at cold start-up anyway. I suppose anything you can do to help this out is a good thing. More of a reason to use a good oil as only what is left over on the bearing surfaces from the last time you shut it off is there lubricating until things catch-up. If the oil pressure sending unit was on the return side of the oil circuit...it would probably scare you to death waiting for it to go off.

Wink

Been doing this for years, on all my cars too. Fill up filter about half way, let it sit and soak up oil while your draining old oil. You will get pressure alot faster by doing this and your engine will love you for it!!

My motor calls for 2.4 litres. If I add oil to my filter should I add less to the engine when filling, say 2.2 litres instead.

Do not prefill oil filter. If you prefill the filter the intial oil in the filter will be full of contaminents and on start up they will end up in the engine. The bearings and other rotating parts in the engine will retain enough oil to be protected during start up with an empty filter.

Huh?????????

You're suppose to be putting new oil in a new filter, where are these "contaminants" comming from?

Yes, the oil quantity listed is what is required for the "oil system" which includes the motor, hoses, filter, etc.

Filling the bottle at the factory, the bottle not being cleaned good enough before filling a number of other places.

Never pre-filled and doubt if I will....76k miles...Still runs like new, doesn't use oil between changes, and doesn't smoke.

I think what Cat Mech is getting at is....when you pour oil into the filter to pre-fill it, your pour that oil in on the "output" side of the filter. When you screw it on, you have some slight amount of unfiltered oil that enters the system. The thing has a check valve in it that prevents you from pouring the oil into the filter on the input side...as through all those little holes around the perimeter.

I think everybody is splitting hairs here anyway and we all have our opinions. That is what makes it interesting and fun. I have known people that would actually remove the plug in the bottom of the crankcase to drain out every possible drop of oil from the engine, until one of them cracked his cases when he screwed it back in too tight...it's a pipe plug stupid! There is also some company that makes a device to hook to your return line and run the bike until the oil comes out clean. That is getting pretty overkill. If you want to do that....just unhook your return and run it into a container. I am sure there is somebody out there that bought one of these and watched his oil until it was clean...but forgot to add oil as he watched it and fried his engine. My point is...you will never ever get every drop of dirty oil out of that engine and if it makes you feel better to pre-fill...that's fine too.

Not on a Twin Cam. The filter is the last thing to get the oil in the oil circuit. (Unlike in a typical car engine where the filter is the first thing to get the oil from the pump).
