Default Diesel Oil In Crankcase ?

.....Just to stimulate some discussion......What do you all think about running a diesel oil like Rotella in the crank case ? At say $8.50 a gallon you can drain it every 1000-1500 miles...........Diesels beat the s@#% out of oil..........Any old schoolers running AeroShell ??

Well lets see. Rotella comes in 10w-40 and 10w-30. Harley says 20w-50 for my Dyna. And I don't think that we need advanced soot control. I'm sure sombody runs this oil. But I will change my oil every 3000 miles. I think I can spend $40 to put synthetic in her.

Diesel Oil is a severe duty oil. Harley says you can use it in a pinch. But there is a reason it's $9 a gallon.

I have no idea why this doubled.

The engines that use this oil are massive. They change gallons not quarts. The oil has additives that are designed to thicken as the soot from the diesels contaminates the oil. I don't think my Harley needs that.

I have a 350 engine that mobile 1 synthetic was put in at 33k. I have 278k on it and the engine is tight as a drum.

Every mechanic I have talked to has commented on the shape of this motor and what kept it there.

I knew a guy once that put kerosene in his radiator in the winter. Cheaper than antifreeze he said. Never did ride with him again.

My owners manual says that if Harley- Davidson oil is not availiable, use an oil suitable for Deisel engines.

You can do it.....but are you really saving anything changing it that much? If you use a group IV synthetic like Mobil1Vtwin or Amsoil you can easily go 5000 miles. Why bother?

diesel engines are some of the hardest working on the planet. they run hot and dirty. they use a high detergency package to cope with the byproducts of compression-ignition.their bottom ends take a helll of a pounding with the compression ratios that they run. they use a very stout anti wear package. TELL ME WHY YOU WOULD NOT USE A LUBE THAT CAN DO THIS AND IS RATED FOR DIESEL AND GASOLINE EHGINES ???
btw, i use a 20w60 api CG4 SL rated oil in my 92 fatboy crankcase. works for me

My new 06 EGC manual says if you can't get HD oil to use a 20-50 Diesel oil instead.

I got a 4 gallon jug of that stuff but haven't put it in yet. My reason? I 'd rather measure out my amount by quarts instead out of a 4 gallon jug. A friend of mine rides his bike at least 100 or 200 miles 5 days a week and uses rotella. HE suggested it. I dunno, one of these days i'll make a decision. Name: d81feea5.jpg

When we sold P-39s(liquid cooled engine) to the Russians in WWII they did not use glycol, they drained it out and put kerosene in the coolant system..............
