Default first ride after changing to amsoil and mobil1

changed oil today, put amsoil 20w50 in crank and primary and mobil 1 75 90 in the trans. couldnt really tell any difference, if anything, shifting was a little rougher. Now, i have a 03 fatboy, but been using a 02 manual. I've been told there is not much difference between the two. The manual says 26 oz, i probably put in 24 oz as i spilled a couple oz's accidently and thats all the oil i had. Seen posts were some are putting a whole quart in, i'm wondering if the rough shifting may be due to the oil level being low. Also, that mobil 1 gear lube seems to be kinda thin, i expected it to be alot thicker. Would redline shockproof heavy be better?

Why would you expect the 75W-90 gear lube to be thicker? It is roughly the same viscosity as a 10w to 20w-50 motor oil. Gear oil is measured using a different standar than motor oil, so the viscosity numbers aren't directly interchangable.

You need to find out how much oil that tranny holds. Running it low will eventually cause you grief.

I guess i just assumed it would be thicker since gear lube for equipment & auto's seems thicker. Today is the first time i've changed tranny and primary fluids.

i need to rephrase that, i've only used non syn gear lube in the past and it seems thicker than the syn lube.

Redline Shockproof Heavy pours thicker but thins out when hot. It will quiet your trans a little bit but not if it's low. Better get the right amount of oil in there.

Tranny holds normally 20-24oz(I put in 22oz). I recently switched to Redline Shockproof in both my '95 Heritage and '01 Electra Glide. Smoother shifting and I do not notice any change when I've been riding in our 118degree weather. Buy both a service and parts manual for any bike you own. Everything is there in the service manual along with the procedures.
