Default Dumb Q about changing Oil Filter

Yeah, I know... but here goes anyways...
Riding a 2006 ultra. Do I need to drain my oil before replacing my filter? Just put in 5 qts of syn 3, and at friggin $12/qt, I'm not happy with dropping another $60 for oil. The oil filter is leaking and I want to replace it.

I would remove the oil filter and check to insure the O-ring from the previous filter is not still on it, if it is just remove it and reinstall the filter, if not I would install a new filter. I have seen this happen many time on car engines and usually if the O-ring stuck to the engine the new filter is still good.

Roll it into the dining room, lay it over, switch filters and be on your way. She'll understand!

You didn't ask for oil advice, but I'll throw some out for your benefit. Next oil change, go to Wallyworld auto section and get a 5 qt container of Mobil 1 15w-50 for around $25. Fully synthetic, better oil than Syn3. Do a search here and check it out. A lot of people swear by it, including me.

No you don't. As stated above, replace the filter and make sure you check for the gasket and that it came off with the old filter. Make sure your clean the gasket seat real good and try not to use a paper towel when cleaning. Use a terry towel as this won't tear off and possibly get into your oil. You may want to make sure you check your oil when done, it will be low after the filter change.

Just spin off the old filter and spin on the new one. Checking as already mentioned to make sure the gasket from the previous filter is not stuck there.

You'll be about a 1/3 of a quart low after a filter change. Add it slowly and check it a few times till you know it's at the right level.
