I've read on here that you can put ATF in the primary. I have some Castrol Dexron/Mercon III in the garage. Is that the right ATF to use?

NO.....I have heard people do it........I think Skip does.....I would put a synthetic motorcycle 20w50 like syn3 or mobil1vtwin or amsoil mcv 20w50. Or if you want a trans fluid try redline MTL. But the dexIII isn't heavy enough IMO

or the Harley Formula+ primary chaincase fluid but it's not synthetic.

been running ATF in the primary since the '70s. I've run Ford, Dexron, Mercon, Dexron/Mercon, and who knows what else at various times, but without mixing 'em. What you have will work fine.

LOL, I started using it in my Dad's '78 FLH when I got it from him. He worked in both Medina and Lodi, OH for Medina Auto Parts. The bike was bought from the HD dealer in Brunswick in Dec 1977. I got it from him in May 1981 with 900 miles on it, as he preferred his '73 Sportster. I had it for over 200,000 miles. It was a great bike, even for one of those bad ol' AMF machines. I grew up in West Salem, just down the road from Dragway 42. Used to come up to Cleveland for Indians games, and to Blossom for concerts. My Grandad is even in the football Hall of Fame in Canton as part of some rotating exhibit; he helped found the NFL. Gramps also beat Satchel Paige twice in the same day on a semi-pro baseball team for one of the Akron rubber companies.

I gots Buckeye roots!

But I dang sure don't ever wanna move back!

DAMN........I haven't heard anybody mention Satchel in 5 years..you are a true buckeye...I worked in Brunswick from 1982-1988.....I live 15 miles from Medina ( they got a real nice HD Dealer at I71 & RT 18 now) and my Grandparents lived in Strongsvillle from 1957 to 1973 then I moved back there after they died....I can't leave cause Mom & Dad are in their late 70's and hanging by a thread......plus......I gotta admit......I love this old rusty steel mill town......guess it's in my blood. But when the kids hit college..........Charleston, SC is looking good if ya know what I mean...or I wouldn't mind a place in West Texas or NM or AZ.
