Default To Flush or not to Flush, That is the question....

Hey Y'all,

I Just got 4qts of 20W 50 Mobile1 V-Twin oil and plan on changing my oil soon. I bought the bike with 10K on it and have no idea what was ran before. I used regular HD oil for my first change at 3k miles I put in Syn-3 for my 2nd change but think my consumption is still high (>1qt per 5K) This consumption is pretty linear, meaning that I lose about the same amount the first thousand after the change as I do the last thousand which tells me it's not the oil losing it's ability to carry dirt or that it is breaking down but maybe just that it's not good stuff. I hope that the Mobile 1 will do better. I know that changing brands can lead to problems from the mixing of additives etc so I'm wondering if it would be wise to flush when I change this time. If so what would be a good choice for flush? Rislone, Marvel, 0W 30 motor oil? I'd like to get as fresh a start as possible with this change...

Agreed. I would just do my first change with the syn a little early. The syn will be cleaning for you.

i talked to the mobil mfg rep in daytona. no need to flush and the oil has no additives, so it won't let the pressure down to where the light comes on. i'm going to this this week.

Thanks Guys! My web page tells my story but it is currently down. I'm a high mileage rider, having taken 1 bike over 200k and 2 bikes over 100k about a half dozen or more over 40k and I know oil makes a difference! Don't know if I'll keep my sporty long enough to put 100K on it but regardless I want to keep it in as good a condition as possible. I decided to just run the Mobile 1 V-Twin synthetic changing every 5k and see how it works out. My 2nd choice would be Rotella and change every 2500. I have a 30 mile interstate commute to work so most my miles are 70MPH high gear cruisin so 5k should not be too much.... Of course I'll watch the consumption, when oil breaks down or loses it's ability to carry dirt it just disappears.
