Completed 1st transmission oil change. Thanks all.
and it still runs. I guess I did it right. Okay, next is the primary. In a couple of days I'll do that. Thanks to all the information on HDForums.com i am able to work on my bike. Jap bikes were easy, and so are harleys. The tranny still clunks the same amount. I used the Harley tranny oil. Is there a brand that will keep the clunk down?

Try Redline Shockproof Heavy at www.redlineoil.com or Mobil1 Synthetic 75w90 gearlube from Autozone or Amsoil Severe gear 75w90 gear lube from one of the Amsoil guys here. Any of those are better then the Harley oil. IMO I use the Redline Shockproof Heavy. I get it from Summit Racing. You can order on the web from Summit as well (google). But what ever you do put gear oil in the trans instead of motor oil.

The clunk that we all hear is normal. It is the design of the transmission. I have not heard anyone talk about the new 6 speed and whether or not it "clunks". It is a completely different design. The new tranny uses shift dogs vs shift forks. The 5 speed gears actually move around in there where as the six speeds gears are stationary and use the dogs to change gears.
The clunk is just part of owning a Harley....at least always has been.

Good job. I run Redline Shockproof Heavy in my transmission. Still get the clunk but not as much metal on the metallic drain plug.
I've found it to be easier to refill the primary using the primary chain inspection cover rather than the derby cover.
