Default oil temp

I just purchased an oil temperature dipstick for my 93 sportster and was just wondering what temp should it run at? And what temp is too hot?

Dpends on a few facters. For general riding around, you wouldn't expect it to much above 200*. Max prolonged with dino oil would around 220*; 240* for short bursts. For synthetic oils add 20-30*, depending on the oil used.

Anything up to about 250F is fairly normal. On the road, expect 210-215. In town it will be higher. Significant breakdown of dino oil doesn't start until 250F. Synthetics will take more punishment.

While I agree , generally, with the oil temps and their effects on oil (actually synthetics can usually withstand 300 degrees and still give adequate protection) I think an earlier Sporty will run a bit cooler than the temps given because it is tuned a bit richer than a newer twincam with EPA leaning.

If you get over 250F with normal riding I would look into it. But those dipstick temp guages are not always the most accurate.
