It does contribute to piston build up but most of that is due to the PCV system and thats why some of us route it to atmosphere.

I am thinking I am going to go with Redline syn 20w-50. It seems from everything I have read on here and other websites it is the best. I talked to the service manager at the local HD dealer and he said don't waist the money on syn unless you live in Death Valley. My opinion is that it would be a worthy investment to go with a good syn oil like Redline.

What do you guys think?
Like you I have an FXD, so that means it probably is a 96" or bigger. Therefore, you will have some heat issues during the summer. Why your dealer made such a remark is puzzling at best. I would go with a good synthetic oil; that`s what I use.

Sure, I use Rotella T6 in both mine and my wifes FXDC. That oil is put through hell in semi trucks all the time. I ch a nge it out every 2k miles since the inside of the p r imary is a pressure cooker. I get it by the gallon from wally world for $21 any day of the week.

I put the extended drain interval Amsoil through my own rigorous testing on my Honda Civic which tortures oil in pretty short order and it did the same thing everyone elses did.....I dont use the $hit.

My dad's bike, like mine, has the stock intake with a k&n filter.

Could you go into more detail about your testing please?
Amsoil is one of the favorites of the supercharger/turbocharger crowd, and they stress oil about as much as anyone, so it would be interesting to know your test procedure and what you found.

Default Easy Question...

I have searched and there are clearly 100,000 threads on this but it also has me confused, so I just need a straight answer. I'm about to change all my fluids.

1. Amsoil for the motor - is this just the standard 20w50 Amsoil I can get at an Auto Parts store?

2. Primary - What can I get at the same store or HD dealer that goes in here? Can I use the same Amsoil?

3. Tranny - I want to use a 75/140 or a 80-85/140 - what is readily available and recommended?

4. I'm assuming get my filter at HD, or is there anywere else to go?

Thanks!

A K&N oil filter is nice to put on/off with the nut on the end of the filter.

On the oil I would recommend for you to use a full oil synthetic 20w50. I used Mobil1 or Castrol. Amsoil is real go to. The oil filter I have been using Fram for years on my bike with no troubles. I don't care if it chrome or not, but that's my preference. They sell special oil for the trans & primary. Backing the early shovelhead days you would run the same oil in the trans and primary and you would in the engine. Harley oils are way to over price. Look for a small motorcycle shop in your area that specials in Harley, not a dealer.
