I am going to give Amsoil a try this go around. Have been using Mobil V Twin with good results but want to try Amsoil before our next long ride.

Default oil question

hold yer horses! I don't want to beat a already dead idea but do want to ask something. Last time I changed my oil I put Amsoil 20w-50 in all three holes ('12 FXDB) and then I felt a bit more metal rattling than the dealer installed oil. Talked to someone on this forum and they said they would only put heavier weight oil in their tranny. I forgot if some folks out heavy weight oil in their Transmission or Primary? I had a 75w-90 on hand and put it in one of the holes and think it was the transmission. I do not think people put these heavy weight oil in the primary right? Cannot find my notes but want to confirm before I go ahead and change all fluids.

now you've thrown something in the mix.

really? aft in the primary? funny thing is HD recommends same 20w-50 in all three holes and I presume they have tested this and recommend this otherwise they'd have a lot of warranty issues.

I believe 20w-50 engine oil is a heavier viscosity than 75-90 gear oil.

actually they're about the same viscosity https://www.hdforums.com/forum/oil-a...-gear-oil.html

It had to be the transmission as the oil in the primary is filled through the derby cover.
Check out Spectro, they have a specific oil for the primary chaincase and another for the transmission which is a 75W140 called HeavyDuty platinum 6speed

It only makes sense to put gear oil in gear cases.
However, some swear by a 20-50 motor oil in their gears.
